because they need more care than people are willing to give. they dont care about people like say a dog does and people resent that & try to force it. people believe what they've heard - that they all bite & they all stink. they just assume its true when its not - a form of sterotype. im the average person so i cant understand how the majority of people dont like rodents. i see something totally different than them and cant understand their point of view most of the time.
of course they try to escape - wouldnt u if you were trapped in a home the size of your bathroom? in the wild they travel for 5 or 6 miles at night looking for food. we just stick them in a tiny cage & set the food in a bowl. the cages most people get are too small. i have 3 cages connected for one of my hamsters. i hide their food rather than set it out. i actually make efforts to understand them & make them happy.
the females are sometimes smelly, but often the smell is the cage that the owner doesnt bother to keep cleaned. your toilet would stink too if u never flushed it. but does smelly mean u should hate? i know lots of stinky people.
people are in general selfish and they want pets that "cuddle" with them. since hamsters dont -though people try and force it-and get mad when they dont.

Almost all small animals are nocturnal, but most are willing to get up and play during the day, or even change their schedule. Hamsters, for the most part, are an exception. They're one of the most stubborn and grumpy small animals out there.
I don't hate them, but I don't like them either. I also work at a pet store and can say that out of all the animals we carry, hamsters are one of my least favourite. Even at night many of them aren't very active, they're just fat balls of fluff.
I think they make okay starter pets for children, since they're easy to take care of, but once a child has learned the basics and has become responsible, I generally recommend mice, rats, or gerbils.
Hamsters are also one of the most likely small animals to bite someone. Most other animals would rather bolt away if you were to wake them up , but a hamster would prefer to simply turn around and bite you. Out of all the small animals I take care of at the store, and all of the ones I've had as pets, I've never been bitten by anything except for a parakeet and a couple hamsters. And it really, really hurts.

I don't no Ive had hamsters since i was like a year old and I'm 13 now. Maybe they remind people of rats cause they are in the same family or maybe they don't hate them maybe its just that they now they don't live long so they don't want to get attached to the cute little creature.

I had 2 myself. I hated one though. The other one was an angel. Brownie and Moocow (I didn't name them). Brownie after just one week of having them ate Moocow's face off while I was sleeping. I'm not kidding. ATE HER FACE OFF AND KILLED HER. Then a year later, Brownie died as well. Brownie hated me and always bit me and ran away from me. I honestly didn't care about the smell or the weekly scrub down of the cage. I hate hamsters because they were my first pet all my own, and Brownie ruined them for me.

I don't hate hamster I think they are cute. However, not everyone shares that same response. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that they look like rodent (rat like creature).

I love hamsters specially teddy bears, but I am looking to get rid of mine because she's the little devil.. but the cutest thing ever! I don't want to kill her just because she hates being picked up, but loves the taste of human blood (no joke). I tried everything to tame her, but she does not like it and will not allow it. I have noticed that she loves to listen to you talk. She will sit there and look at you. Just don't get one unless you know they are tamable!

I've been told (by my sister) that it hurts when they bite you because their teeth are so FREAKIN long.
MY hamster doens't smell because we clean his cage every other Monday(or if it needs it sooner) but one of the girls that I used to know had 2 hamsters (One in one room and another one in another room) and there whole house stank like hamster because they didn't clean their hamsters' cages out(They also died quicker that way)
But the main reason people hate them is probably because most hamsters sleep all day and run on their wheel all night(Or called nocturnal and annoying)

I've never been around a hamster, so in my ignorance I'm not sure I could tell the difference between a hamster and a rat.

I don't think people hate THEM. I think people hate the weekly cleanings that they need to do regarding the hamster's cage-- yuck! And they usually smell. Some people just don't like them, the way other people hate bugs and creepy crawlies. I don't understand why, but it happens.

hamsters do not look like rats. rats are amazingly constructed agile and efficient animals. hamsters, when given the right environment, like a desert full of sand to burrow in deep underground where no one will bother them, put them in socks and spin them, throw them in the air, torment them for the inital honeymoon phaze and than leave them in a stinky cage with inappropriate bedding and stale pellet food, and probably forget to give them water....that is the fate of most hamsters. the novelty wears off, and they are thrown in the corner and ignored.
