"it ain't over til it's over" - Yogi Berra

In other words, don't quit until it's actually over - play all out until the last moment

I'm a former basketball coach, and a lifelong basketball fan. One of the greatest basketball players of all time said something that I will always tell young players. The great BILL RUSSELL once said: "The idea is not to block every shot. The idea is to make your opponent believe that you might block every shot." This quote epitomizes the concept of basketball being more of a mental game than most people think.

A lot of the time (especially with young players) the victors are the ones who won the game before even stepping onto the court.

In my opinion the WORST one is "winning isn't everything, it's the only thing", a misquote of Vince Lombardi. I can't stand that attitude, where if you don't win it's a complete waste of time. A better quote is "it's not that you won or lost but how you played the game" from Grantland Rice.

Yogi Berra said:
"90% of this game is mental. The other half is physical."

Yogi has a whole list of these types of quotes. When asked about attending a funeral for a former teammate he said: "If you don't go to theirs, then they won't come to yours!"

The team that controls the ball, controls the game.

Actually, my favorite is from baseball. Satchel Paige, who is as famous for his quotes as he is for his skill as a pitcher, said, "Don't look back, something might be gaining on you." I like it because it is true on so many different levels. When we look back, phyiscally, it slows our forward progress. If we look back, mentally, and dwell on what we did wrong, could have done better, etc., it slows down our growth as people.
