The best position for each person is different. The key is making sure you are 100% comfortable!! If you are tense at all, your body will have a hard time "letting down" and your baby will have to work harder to get all the milk he/she needs. For myself, the best position is laying down in bed. Both my son and myself are extremely comfortable and I let down in a matter of seconds, shortening the entire length of the nursing session. Other than that, it really depends on how old/big your baby is. If you child is very young and small, if you want to sit and feed, the football hold supported by a pillow or 2 would be the best position. But I myself love laying in bed doing the side by side nurse. Not only is it comfortable, but you have some down time to feel relaxed since your day is mostly likely already pretty hectic with your household stuff and taking care of the baby. Let me know if you need more info. Hope this helps!!! ~~~

As a brazilian nursing student, I´ve learned (and saw that it really works) the best position for breastfeeding is to let the baby´s belly get in touch with yours (if u´re sit) and let his/her mouth find by him/herself the best position to suck. Dont use those artificial nipples that are sold in drugstores for breastfeeding and the baby must open widely his mouth and suck in the best way he/she founds. Let the baby suck as much and he/she wants without changing the breast. The next time s/he feels hungry, give the breast it wasnt used. By the way, if u have too much milk and feel pain, get something cold (but not ice) to put on your breast for about 15 minutes.

just sit and hold the head of the child in ur one hand. Now with the other hand, hold ur nipple with two fingers and press ur breast a little inside and feed. By holding ur nipple means that u must keep the nose of the child free. Otherwise he/she can choke, because breasts are too soft and so does child's nose. If u don't press, ur nipple inside, it will just cover and block the nose of the child...

It depends on so many things!
Most mothers and babies seem to like the cradle hold (or the "Madonna and child" pose).
Baby would be laying with his body across your lap to the left and latched on to right breast (or vice-versa). Baby should be tummy to tummy with mom and should not have to turn his head to reach the breast. Baby should be "nose to nipple" with mom. Mom should be supporting baby's head with her right forearm (NOT the inside of her elbow!) and her hand will be along baby's back or towards baby's bottom, depending on how big baby is. Mom can use her left hand to hold the breast in this position. She should make sure that she is compressing the breast tissue to line up with the corners of baby's mouth. So, in the cradle hold, mom would bring her hand up from below the breast in a "U" shape to support the breast. (Think of compressing a BIG sandwich to fit it in your mouth. You have to line the sandwich up side to side with your mouth, you don't turn it on it's side to fit it in.)
If you are having a hard time with latching a young baby (or if you just had a c/s) then the football hold can really help. Again, if you are feeding on the right breast, imagine it this way. In the football hold you support your baby's head in your right hand and his back along your right arm beside you. You support your breast with a "C" hold. This means that you support the right breast with your left thumb on top, well back from your areola (the darker skin surrounding the nipple) and the fingers of the left hand underneath. (Again, imagine aligning the sandwich so that you can take a bite.) He is facing you, with his mouth at nipple height. Your baby's legs and feet are tucked under your right arm with his hips flexed and his legs resting along side your back rest so the soles of his feet are pointed toward the ceiling. (This keeps him from being able to push against your chair.) Pillows can help to bring the baby to the correct height to line up the anatomy.

I prefer to lay on my side, with my baby facing me- either propped up on pillows or with just a pillow under my head and one behind my baby to keep her up on her side.
This is what is most comfortable for me- I just stick my boob in her mouth and I can dose off a little!
