As you get older, the risk of chromosomal problems like Down syndrome increase. For example, at 30, 1 woman in 700 has a baby with Down syndrome, and at 35 the risk is 1/300. By 40 the risk is ~1/100, and at 45 the risk is ~1/20. These are the big concerns with maternal age.
Since you're over 35 you should make sure your OB gives you a referral to see a genetic counselor. There are several screening options available to help you fully understand the risks in a pregnancy, and an amniocentesis is just an option. Some docs make it sound like an amnio is necessary - it's not.
Good luck!

I have a couple of friends older than 40 who had kids and were OK.
The propability of having a child w Down syndrome is significant above 35 especialy after 40.
So far, all 40sh moms I know have had healthy babies.

The older you are the more likely it is that your baby might be born with some kind of abnormality. However, my grandmother had my mom when she was 45 years old and my mom came out just fine. So, there's really no way to say. You need to talk to a doctor about this.

my best friend had her two babies after age 40. They are fine. But it's a good idea to be monitored more closely than if you were younger.

it depends on your health history and your family's health history. My grandmother had her last child at 44. he was born fine and he is a PhD teaching in a NYC prestigious university. She saved the best for last. and, i had my daughter at 38 and everything was fine too. You should talk to your doctor. And if you are planning on having a child take folic acid to ensure having a healthy child.

Yeah, its safe. It would just be advanced maternal age. And they have certain precautions for that. As soon as your preggo, your considered high risk because of your age.
But, it can and has been done often.

No. Not for you and not for the baby. Why would you even consider it?
