I live across the river in Vancouver Washington. It's better here. The commute is heck. Both bridges are a nightmare.
We are growing at an alarming rate. Our property tax value went up 50K just last year. Portland is the same. We have lower property tax and no state income tax. Oregon does. Yes, they even tax your Federal retirement. It's ridiculous.
It is a lovely area with two volcanoes, well three if you count Adams, the beach and desert are with a couple hours drive. Portland and Vancouver are considered seaports.
I love this area, lived in many others as a military wife. This is home. I was born in Oregon.

Portland is extremely diverse with many cultures represented. The black custom rather bigger for the duration of WWII with the shipyards. They pulled human beings out west from the midwest and different areas harm from the melancholy, and households began new right here. They have been extra centrally placed east of what's now the single million-5 constrained-get entry to highway in NE Portland. yet because of fact the 50's they are residing everywhere alongside with the suburbs, like every physique else. Portland is a liberal city and a liberal city government. i can not communicate for Seattle, because of fact that i've got by no ability lived there. purely visited. and that they seem to have a snob innovations-set going for them. as though they are extra upscale and extra like a small ny city. i think of there are extra Asians residing in Seattle, than the different minority. yet Portland has every physique. Come and verify it out, and additionally you will see what I advise.

Portland
City (pop., 2000: 529,121) and port, northwestern Oregon, U.S. Situated on the Willamette River, southeast of its confluence with the Columbia River, Portland was settled in 1829 on the site of an early Indian campground. It was laid out in 1844 and incorporated in 1851. Early growth was stimulated by gold rushes and the flow of immigrants along the Oregon Trail. It is the state's largest city and principal port. Exports include lumber, aluminum, and wheat. Shipbuilding and meat-packing are important industries. It is the site of many educational institutions, including Lewis and Clark College (1867) and Reed College.

Oh...it totally sucks in Portland...you DO NOT want to move here. It rains too much and if you don't have web feet, you'll never survive! It's sink or swim here...naw, you don't wanna come. Nope, lousy area to live. Way too expensive...better off going elsewhere or stayin' put :)
Uhhh...written by a true Oregonian & with all due respect...we all want the invasion of others moving here to stop! Known for being a beautiful green state (plus more), we are watching our spacious land be taken up by apartments, housing, shopping areas...aargh!
