Depending on how long he has left on his current contract, the service provider may offer a free upgrade if the contract is extended. Also if there's not many months left on the contract it's probably cheaper to run out the rest of the contract on the lowest available tariff and take out a new contract (Also depends how much you want to spend on the phone obviously).

but there are problems with that...they may be hot or may not work with his provider...so you would have to check and make sure.
i would try going to his provider and explaining...they may be able to give you a good deal...they always bull$hit but in the end they can give you a phone for pretty cheap.
