would that mean that absolutely no one could view where a person has been on the internet? If not what does that mean or do for my internet.

Cookies are designed to keep user settings for example when you log into my.yahoo.com and you want it to remember your password and or other settings after you log out, that is kept in your cookies. Though if you get rid of cookies to help cover your tracks, it won't prevent people from snooping around. Spyware and other viruses and programs don't always keep track of your cookies but can document your behaviors and habits and send information back without even bothering with the cookies. To reduce that, you need keep up with software updates antivirus/antispyware and a firewall. Keep in mind also that this will make you more secure, but not unvunerable.

If I were to recommend a program, Mcafee and Norton are generally good programs. Mcafee doesn't seem to use as much memory as Norton, but Norton has a strong track record when compared with third party groups such as virus-bulletin. Both Norton and Mcafee offer suites as well, but sometimes it can become more resource intensive, especially with Norton Internet Security.

Firewalls such as Kerio and Zonealarm aren't bad, but be aware the higher the security level you generally set a firewall at, the more annoying messages it will ask you to verify that you authorized the computer to execute a command. Some of these questions it asks can be quite confusing. I don't know as much about spyware, but yahoo offers a free download and adaware by lavasoft has worked for my in the past

If you delete all cookies, it just means that when you revisit a site, you'd have to put in any custom information. Like if you went to Amazon and put in your user id/password, you'd have to reenter it.

I delete my cookies (for security reasons) all the time. doesn't affect a thing. Computer runs fine... all I have to do is relogin to the sites.

You could do this but most websites will not work correctly without cookies enabled.
