I realize labels are stupid, however no democrat/liberal in the government has ever said he's a crazy conservative or a nut case conservative. It's kind of funny that Bush in the elections would call Kerry a liberal and people would think worse upon him. It's kind of funny that myself I don't have any labels that people can make fun of me about.
White
Straight
Male
Conservative
I am a Yankee and despise "rednecks"

Not that I think it's right I just find it humorous that people will get mad when you call them a liberal because the mainstream interperitation is generally on the bad side of society.

Yeah good point down there, I think it's funny that Democrats have to act conservative to be elected. It just shows the lack of support that Liberals have in the US. Look you are all intitled to you own opinions and beliefs I just think its funny how you're out numbered.

I said yankee because I don't want liberals to get the idea that I am some redneck, I don't name myself a yankee. I work inside yes, I don't hate people who work outside, I just think it's funny how proud some people are to be a "redneck." It's funny as hell, they might not be dumb people but some of them talk like they have never read a book, seen a tv, a computer, or any source of information or education. It's hilarious to hear a redneck talk about politics. I was in the bank and one was discribing that Eqypt had attacked Lebanon and that Lenanon was bombing Egypt and Iraq. It was so funny, and the other redneck was like damn man thats crazy, probably not knowing what Lebanon is. Please make fun of me, what do rednecks say about yankees that makes any bit of sense, please please please anyone try to make fun of me based on what I am and my views.

Yes, unfortunately the term liberal has a negative meaning.. I believe this happened because the right wing Republican media began using it as a slur, giving it the same connotation as libertine, saying the word AS IF it meant something bad. The repetition worked. Words change their meaning all the time when large numbers of people begin to use them in a different way or nowadays, when the media promotes a new word through repetition.

You know it's something I really don't understand about Americans, this polarization into Liberal and Conservative camps and the negativity each side heaps on one another.

It didn't used to be that way in American politics, there was alot of bipartisanship and working together in government for the greater good of the people , rather than the political parties.

It started with the late Lee Atwater, in the middle 80s , early 90s and sadly it's deteriorated so that does Congress and the Senate ever get anything really done.

Not being an American, Canadian small L liberal, ie moderate in US terms, this makes me scratch my head and go hmmmmm. But what really depresses me is that this kind of polarization thinking is beginning to sneak up here with our political parties. Why does someone 's difference of opionion make them the mortal enemy?

You are a tad judgemental and hateful (despising rednecks) what do you do for a living? Work inside? Rednecks are masculine types who work outside most of the day. How does that make them despicable? And if you don't think the yankee label doesn't invite humorous stories, where have you been?

Well, I'm liberal in many areas but I guess what could be called conservative in a few as well.

I guess it's possible to take any so-called label and make fun of it in some way. But why people would waste their time doing that is beyond me.

The negative stigma about the word "liberal" comes from extremist newscasters/bloggers and the likes... I am as liberal as they come (mostly) but I love smart conservatives, and smart conservatives love smart liberals... name calling and mud-slinging is for the intellectually immature and I could care less, what one word someone thinks they are putting me down with, proove me wrong and I will eat my words, but name calling, i got over that in elementary school.

It really does not offend me to be called a liberal. Liberal is defined as someone who does not believe in biblical teachings. And since I am an atheist I figure it suits me just fine. Although I am less liberal then independent I am surely not brainwashed into following the conservative train of thought.

It's called 'ignorance.'

Making fun of you would be mean. You're a Richard Cranium with poor writing skills.

The extremism inherent in our political system just results in this sort of sh!t-slinging and blind hatred for "the opposition". Just a bunch of pissy kids in a sandbox. :\
