I'm sorry, my female rat died last month of cancer too. :( Rats are nocturnal and don't require much attention during the day. Just give her as much attention you can when you're not at work. Try to give her a special food treat like a banana slice or cheese. My rat loves babybell cheese, if you get the small wheels of cheese, cut her about 1/4 of it. Good luck.

I have a rat right now and he just loves attention. Since one of your rats passed away, the other is feeling depressed obviously. Try socialising with her a lot more when you get before and when home from work. And also don't forget to deep clean her cage, her sister's scent is still around and that's a very common thing for them to get upset about. Really, your rat just needs time and comfort. Of course new toys and treats such as carrots, tomatoes, and bananas will probably make her feel better. The toys will give her more things to do and having new treats given before you go to work will give her something sweet to chew on while you're gone. However, you do need to give the cage a good scrubbing. I use a 60-gallon fish tank (no water duh) for my male rat and about every two weeks I'll clean it. But every month I scrub it down with hot water and antibacterial soap. Regardless of what kind of cage you have, you really need to clean it. One more thing; if you had anything else in the cage, that either needs to be tossed or cleaned as well. It's good to just give your rat time and also rid or clean the things that may remind her of her sister. Hope this helped.

i know this sounds rediculous but maybe get your rat a toy rat,i had a huge male rat that would not get along with my other rats not even females, but he was very lonley,i had one of those life sized plastic halloween rats laying around and i put it in his cage as a joke at first just to see his reaction but he actually took to it like it was his long lost friend,he carried it everywhere with him, slept with it and even would bring it peices of food and groom it,it was the only thing in his cage he never chewed on you could try it the wost that will happen is she will chew it to peices and make a bed out of it

The monkey therapy comes to mind with this question. They put a fake monkey in the cage with the monkey to comfort the lonely monkey. Maybe you could buy or make a fake rat for your rat to cuddle with and that might make her feel better. Or could she be getting sick too?

What about a mirror or put a little clock or watch in a toy rat so it hears the ticking and thinks it is a heart beat. Give her lots of cuddles.

You need to buy another rat.
Rats get very upset if they do not have friends. They will stop eating, get sick, etc.
I would recommend getting her a friend. It might do her some good. My little girl I had, died of cancer, and my other one was depressed. But as soon as I got another one, she got over it really quick!

fill up old matchbox's with peas and sweetcorn, wrap little treats in kitchen paper for her to dig out, give her a tray of cat grass to play in...hide sunflower seeds (like sweeties to a rat) in it..
put an old teddy bear in there...make her a clean fresh hammock out of an old tea towel and fill it with shredded newspaper so she can bury herself and have something to shred...
give her a tree branch to chew on...cuddle her lots
