This is a somewhat vague term, meaning that a treatment may/will follow the common treatments or procedures that are followed or used by the majority of those in the industry. It may not necessarily be the best for any given individual, since we all may have different results or reactions to any "standard" treatments.

The term can and is applied to other industries, even in workmanship by a laborer. It emits some protection to the one performing, simply because it is an accepted standard in the named profession. As in all things, results can vary under different circumstances.
