We hear about teenagers starting to drink, smoke and have sex early just to be "cool" and "grownup" and I think, "Wouldn't it be cooler and more grownup to say no to these things for all your life?" What do you think???

I think its mostly on the parents. If you instill values early on they wouldn't be the way they are. I am not saying be strict but be willing to listen, talk, and spend time with your child so they don't have to turn to the wrong kids for attention.

Well, I'm 27 and when I was 12, I started smoking, and at 15 my mom was buying alcohol for me. At the time, I too thought it was "cool," boy, was I wrong. I'm struggling to quit smoking now...15 yrs later. However, I don't have a craving for the alcohol. I partied enough in highschool, and was raised around alcoholics, so I had my share of that and by the time I turned 21, I was over the drinking. There are pluses and minuses to my story, but I totally agree with you. If I could go back now, I'd love to relive my childhood and not have started smoking or drinking. It's everything BUT cool, and none of it's good for your health. I definitely would've taken better care of my body had I known then what I know now. I wake up with this awful cough everyday, I can't taste food like I used to, and I can't be as active as I'd like to because I get winded real easily now...So to all you teens that want to hurry up and grow up by making bad, unhealthy choices...DON'T!!! I don't have any regrets in life, but I've definitely learned from past mistakes. I chose to destroy my body.......does that sound logical??? NO! It is totally cooler to say no to these substances forever. If it doesn't have a positive outcome for your life, why do something that's gonna harm your body? If you can make healthy choices, why would you want to do otherwise? GOOD POINT!

Yeah, it might be cooler to say no. But since the teenagers are not grownups they will say yes. Just like you said, it's about growing up.

Don't worry, people get wiser when they get a bit older.

That's how it's always been, and most likely, always will be. At that age, the most compelling things are those that are forbidden or discouraged due to one's age. Drinking, smoking, etc, are all part of growing up and discovering one's self. It is certainly better to avoid these things, especially at younger ages, but it is perfectly human for many to participate in these activities before they old enough or ready. But they are not entirely bad in their own right (ok smoking is), I mean do you really want to go through life without ever having sex!?

In regard to your question about "cool"--that 's a state of mind and requires nothing more than attitude.

Children are doing these things earlier now because t.v. makes them look so cool. T.V. makes sex look enchanted and romantic but don't show the side effects like catching an STD. It would be cooler to say no to these things always. Thats our job as parents and educators to teach the children we encounter to say no.

this isn't new.

and it's not for those reasons implied. many do have problems it's not about being 'cool'. if it is, then peer pressure is involved more a stress related self imposed injury to not be thwarted from friends and not accepted. i was pressured but i couldn't have cared less about it.

i never smoked cigarettes, found them uttery discusting, like they were full of chemicals.

i drank, but in my later teens.

the yes or no preference i believe in most cases is a personal decision.

That's the wrong way, but the ...usual one, TV, Radio, Shrinks want us to be in!

Earth is dominated by a few people, unknown to us. Earth is a dump Planet (the way Australia was populated long ago) and they want us kept down and not ...heard! So they do e/g to their ability to keep us harmed and not dangerous to them, them being the real psychotic and suppressive ones!
Cheer up!
Ciao...John-John.

I tell all my kids that you better enjoy being a child as long as you can because there's really nothing to look foward to as being an adult except BILLS. That is ,if you become a productive member of society. A lot of it is a lot of "adults" are still juvenile in thought.

Because their parents were too busy working to put food on the table in this ever more expensive society to worry about teaching their children right from wrong!
