I foster dogs/cats for a local animal rescue group. We (hubby and I) have been doing this for over a year now, and have fostered over 60 dogs and gotten them back to good heath (the sick or abused ones) and placed them in loving homes. It has been very rewarding. All the kids in my neighborhood come to my house to see the newest fosters and play and help care for them. It's amazing that children can see the abuses that some of these animals have been through so clearly, and they will treat the dogs with such love and tenderness. It really warms my heart. Our foster group also visits schools and will speak with children on proper animal care. It's not unusual to find out that mom or dad are not taking good care of their pet at home, and there are times the kids can educate the parents. If you want to do something - find a rescue group or a shelter and get involved.

Helping animals is great, but there is only so much time in school, and families only have so many resources.

Our first priority has to be healthy people- good minds, good bodies, and good opportunities. From this foundation, people can reach out and help others who need help- other people and animals as well.

Our curriculum already reinforces the idea of being good to animals. Every story in school, every classroom pet, every zoo trip reinforces that 'animals are good and are our friends'. Can or should this be tuned up somehow? Perhaps- but I'd rather get math and science scores up and make sure people can read and get decent jobs.

The problem with the 'help the animals' bit is that ONLY people who have a good life can be bothered. The world's poor are desperate to eat and cloth their children- they could not care less about animals unless they are food or help them earn money.

If we are going to help the endangered wildlife of the planet, we HAVE to help the people as well. Setting up a refuge for an endangered species all too often means that someone desperate for food or money can more easily find it.

Good heart- don't loose that, but lets see if we can figure out a way to make this work other than rhetoric and meaningless actions.

I agree! I have never once in my life ever donated to people charities or given any money or time for people, but I give money to animal charities every time i see a donation box, and I try to help the ferel cats. I am only 15, but I have already rescued two wild kittens and found homes for them! Animals need us more than people. Besides a lot of people get themselves into the situation and it is their own fault. What can animals do to deserve their situation? As far as people go, God helps those who help themselves!

I think education is vital to the survial of species in our modern world. I hate hearing about people to buy/adopt/find/whatever a pet, and know zip about them.
