It completey easy and straight forward. You undress to the waist and draw your knee's up towards your bottom and let your knee's drop open. Then a metal instrument is inserted inside you to open you up a little, and a sample is taken by gently scraping around your cervix.Painless and very quick, also very important so get going and have one...could save your life!!

It always seems worse than it actually is. Basically, you go to the nurse or gyno and you are placed in a chair or laying flat on a bed and the nurse/gyno etc will separate the walls of the vagina with something called a speculum. The speculum is a slender metal or plastic instrument that looks like a duckbill. It will not hurt or pinch and is usually warmed or moistened before being gently inserted. It is an awkward experience, but it should not be painful. You may feel pressure that can be uncomfortable but should not feel pain. Tell your clinician if this is not the case. At this point, your health care provider can see your cervix. The cervix is the lower portion of your uterus and can be a site of abnormal cell development. After the speculum is inserted, they will use a spatula to gater cells from the cervix wall. It's a very gentle scraping movement and I promise it does not hurt. After this you are finished and if all is well you don't need to return for three to five years!

It's VERY important to have your smear test, it is the only way you can get an early warning of cervical cancer. It's not very nice but it's all over very quickly, only takes a couple of minutes. You have to lie down and let the nurse or doctor take a sample of the cells from your cervix. They do this with something called a speculum, it opens you up so they can get the sample. It's best if you relax and think of something else while they do this. It DOESN'T HURT at all, but it is a bit unpleasant. However it is MUCH better than cancer!

Please please get your smear done as soon as possible, it is really important.

Do you mean what happens when you get a pap smear?

Well, you should get them annually from your OBGYN. Everything off, gown on that closes in the front. Up on the table, butt to the edge of the table, feet in the stirrups, legs apart.

For the pap smear, the doctor will use a speculum to open your vaginal canal up so she can see. Qtip swab with collect first specimen. Then a snip to collect tissue sample. Then she collapses the speculum and removes it. Finally, doctor will feel around inside to make sure all the parts are where they should be.

You may bleed slightly afterwards so bring a pantyliner to wear. That's it! Results take about a week.

I'm the same! I wussed out for so long, but the lady nurse who finally did this for me was lovely. Maybe I was very lucky. And you have to remember they really don't care you've got you're knickers round your ankles - they chose this line of work after all!

They ask you to take off the bottom half of your clothes in private behind a screen, and they have also given you a sheet to protect your modesty which you put over you as you lie down, so you don't feel like all the spiders on the ceiling can spy on you...!

They then come round the screen to you and the smear itself takes a tiny little moment. It doesn't hurt, it's just a scratch or a prod feeling, and if she's nice she'll chat along and make it seem breezy. Let her know it's your first time too, because you were nervous. I did! She'll have heard it tons of times and hopefully make you feel really at ease.

Best of luck! Vix x

I was so nervous when I had my first smear but after Id had it I felt silly for worrying because it was nothing. I had mine done at a gum clinic and they checked for sti's as well. You lie on the bed undressed from the waist down but they'll give you a sheet to cover you over. I was told by friends that a smear would hurt thats why I put it off but I didn't feel a thing! There's nothing to worry about at all so make an appointment!

"A Pap smear takes only a few minutes and is performed as part of a routine pelvic exam. You lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet apart. Your health care provider inserts a speculum into the vagina. The speculum is a tool that holds open the walls of the vagina so your provider can see the cervix. Your provider uses a special swab, brush, or wooden stick to wipe off some cells from the cervix. The cells are sent to a laboratory to be viewed under a microscope."

They also feel your breasts for lumps.

It is very uncomfortable but quick if you have a good doc....

You lay down on the table, put your feet in stirrups, the doc will insert a speculum with a light. The first thing is called a spatula which scrapes a sample from your vaginal wall then a brush which takes a small sample from your cervix. You will feel a little pressure and maybe a smalll pinch. Then the speculum is taken out and the doc will insert 2 fingers in your vagina and push on your stomach. He is feeling for your ovaries. After that you are all done with minimal embarrassment and discomfort. Some women have a little spotting after but it is normal. Hope this helps.

get it done! the inconvenience far out weight the benefits, a little swab with a brush on the neck of the uterus, not that deep in, a wipe to get rid of the lubricant and that's you done. Some spotting might happen post exam this is normal, put a panty liner on as normal

I was dreading it but it wasn't all that bad. They lie you down in a private room and put your legs in stirrups. They then insert a metal thing that is quite cold and turn it to take a scraping. I was a bit dizzy after and a bit embarrased throughout but really that's aas bad as it got. Just go for it, maybe drag a friend along for moral support. Much better to have it than not hun :O)
