My dad walked out on me when I was two. He walked out again when I was three, four and until I walked out on him at sixteen. Now I have b/f John who is lovely but should I try to find out my Dad's problem before he dies?

Only you know whether you want to or not but i'd say you should because after all, it is you dad and maybe he can tell you his reasons for walking out and you can get some closure before he passes away.

This may not be good advice but I feel if a person was not there while they?I was well then don't use an illness to reconnect with me. My Father's Mother was like that then when she was dying she wanted to get to know me, but she had all those other years. So I never spoke to her. I still feel I did the right thing I don't regret it at all.

I think it will be very nice to find out maybe its not you, probably it was the strains of fatherhood and responsibilities--you were lucky tho to at least know your dad---so give the guy a shot see what excuse he has although it will not be good enough to "abandon" you--then forgive but do not forget.

I am sorry for you as this is a tricky question. I always think it is best to treat your Father with respect and give him change to go over history with you. For you need to pick the right time, set the mood and be happy to listern.
Only then can you make your choice but remember as a Father myself we do not always get it right and sometimes we cannot deal with History very well.

Please make note of my name and let me know how it goes please. I am going through same problem with my Son.

Good luck.

Tony.
