Every culture has things that others want to copy... It is a compliment actually. And your question is really about two different things... the first part is about cultural customs and the second is about race.

Whites are probably the largest racial group with an extremely high percentage of loss of cultural 'roots'. Most of us are so mixed (Irish, English, Scandinavian, French, Italian and so on) that even though we are 'white', therefore perceived as a 'race', we have no sense of distinct cultural history. Very generally speaking, the other races have a greater sense of 'origin' and may not feel the need, or freedom, to pick and chose random cultural "coolness" to act out.

As far as "wanting to be black" goes... I suspect the future will bring homogenization of all races and this will allow for greater cultural freedom and pride in that freedom to choose.
What we lose in 'connection' or 'belonging' to our ancestors and their history could be richly rewarded by greater cross-cultural/racial understanding, acceptance of responsibility for the choices we make as individuals beyond race/creed/culture and enable the view of history as a source of lessons instead of reasons, all of which can only help future generations prevent repetition of the atrocities and mistakes of our forefathers.

Its more difficult to be black....................... and being black is less accepted without a significant display of success............and then acceptance still is an issue.
