It's true that picture formats aren't compressible because there aren't any "spaces" (like the space between the close quote and the open parenthesis in this sentence) that can be removed. All the information in the file for the image is needed to recreate the image.
Using a photoeditor to save the file at a lower quality or resolution will make the file smaller but you will lose information- there's no way around it. Even the jpeg conversion mentioned above loses information but the format is very good at fooling the eye into seeing almost the same image.

Zipping an image file only changes its header which will save an insignficant amount of around 3,000-5,000 bytes of information from being contained in the file. In a multi-megabyte file, this is a fraction of 1 percent of the file size and isn't worth the hassle of zipping and unzipping the pics (which we know can number in the hundreds of pics ;)

Use a picture viewer like www.irfanview.com and open the picture, and then save as and you can select a smaller quality to get the size you need.

if you have outlook xp or later you can choose attachment options and choose small medium or large, and it will automatically resize

And anyone that said winzip or winrar sorry, but that won't make the files much smaller.

Most digital cameras produce file sizes that are far too big for most needs -- unless you really want to print everything out at A4 size and highest quality! You need image manipulation software, to shrink the pictures and change the compression.

An excellent free tool for Windows is Irfanview:

It's not a huge download, it's easy to use and it's got plenty of help files.

If your pictures are in bitmap (bmp) format, you can zip them or convert it to jpeg to decrease it's size, however if your pictures are in jpeg format, zipping them will not help. The only way to decrease the file size of jpeg's is to either decrease the resolution or decrease the size through the use of image editing software.

You can use Photoshop (for high end editing) or good old MS Paint which usually comes with Windows.

Zip them. Select the files you want to send then right click them and select Send To-->Compressed Folder. Then just send the .zip file that is made.
