Maria Sharapova never "growls" on court.
Maria Sharapova often grunts through effort on the court.
Grunts can be found annoying but sometimes they are just the result of breathing when putting much effort forward.

It's not voluntary. It's usually a sign that the person is playing the hardest. Ladies do it, men do it, even children do it!
Some do it more like Sharapova and Sanchez, if I'm not mistaken, but see how strong their shots are?
Sharapova was actually fined for interrupting her opponents' attention, her game became much quieter since let's say... 3 years ago. It's now safer to remove the earplugs and unmute the TV!

She grunts and growls for the same reason weight lifters grunt to lift weights. By exhaling hard she can exhert more force into her shots.

it's something that is actually (or was actually) taught at bolletieri's. It helps you to make sure that your are exhaling as you hit the ball which helps you to accelerate the racket.
they don't actually teach you to screech, grunt, or anything like that, that's simply what some players end up doing to ensure that they are releasing their breath at contact, and over time it evolves into some pretty loud stuff. don't forget that seles (maybe the loudest ever) also spent some time at bolletieris (IMG).

I think she doesn't play very well and her noise make me angry! I prefer tennis such stars as Venus Williams, Heine Harden, Cim Cliesters, Davenport or Mouresmo!! They can play but Maria has got more luck then ability!

When you hit the ball you are supposed to let air out of your lungs and she jut goes overboard with the sound. Otherwise think she will be better to watch on the T.V.

sometimes, and i know i do this, players get so into the game that they forget to breath out, this could be her way of getting all her air out as she puts a little extra force on the ball. it could aslo be that gruntinghelps her to hit harder and snap on the ball.another thing it could be is just frustration. i know that when i get mad, i scream when i hit and i yell. it actually does help, even though it looks like it doesn't.

When you breath out your body relaxes so you can generate more racquet speed. They have been teaching this for a while now. Remember Seles?
