All sorts of reasons, depends on the person and the type of arthritis. Many get it through wear and tear of the joints through sports etc when they were younger, some get it as a very young person as a disease of the immune system (juvenile arthritis) and some get osteoarthritis with age and thinning of the bones. Loads of different reasons:
Age.
Hereditary factors.
Some people have illnesses and conditions that make them prone to arthritis.
People that have had breaks sometimes get arthritic trouble in that area later in life,

I don't know for sure but doctors don't know for sure either, but it is being studied..
