if you use over drive in the city all the time,,especially on all the stop and go driving you do,,it is going to be hard on it,,it is meant for more open road driving,,its not going to help you get better fuel economy in the city,,because it is constantly shifting up and down, changing the engine speed every time it does it,,if you was on a free way it would go in over drive,,and you rpm,s would drop,,and you would get better gas mileage, but if you continue to use it in the city,,your just going to work the transmission to death, if you will look in your owners manual it will explain this to you,,i hope this help,s.

NO, do not turn OFF your overdrive!!
Your Expedition most likely has the 4R70 series transmission
the 4th gear is overdrive, being is this gear is best fuel economy for driving over 35 mph
ONLY IF YOU ARE TOWING SHOULD YOU TURN OFF THE OVERDRIVE
under heavy load, the overdrive gear takes tremendous load and causes great heat in the transmission
if you do not use over drive, the highest gear is 'direct', the drive shaft spins at the same speed as the engine's crank shaft
this would generally apply to all automatize transmissions

ford transmissions used to be best used with the overdrive off in stop and go driving or when hauling loads. the newer versions seem to be OK either way.
Check your owners manual and follow its advice
I have had fords and damaged a transmission by overloading it in overdrive

I have the same issue w my ranger ...been driving it for 2 yrs and just finally figured out that if you have the OD on you are actually saving a lot of gas...now I keep it on all the time even on the highway, and kept track of my miles so I am defiantly going to keep it on from now on
