Or if they need a logo, a great slogan, or even marketing ideas such as unique packaging ideas, organization etc. I have great ideas all of the time that help people with their business and several business owners have come to me asking me how to make their business better, for logo ideas, slogans. I even had someone ask me to help them start their business. Many consulting firms, when evaluating whether they want to hire somebody to join their firm, focus on two characteristics: "skill" and "will": basically, is the candidate capable of providing high-value work to clients and do they have a drive or passion for the business of helping other companies succeed. I think this is a useful overall framework to start with.

First let's talk about skill. There are two critical capabilities you need to be successful long-term as a consultant. The first is the ability to provide assistance to companies in addressing problems or issues that they would not be able to resolve on their own. It sounds like you may have some ability to do that in some areas. To be successful, you'd probably need to think about exactly what types of services you would offer. It would also help if you had established frameworks or methodologies to execute some of the projects you take on. If you have specific training that could be of value, or demonstrated "success stories" about how you've helped companies wrestle with difficult issues in the past, then consulting might be a good field for you.

The second critical skill required for long-term success in consulting is the ability to attract clients and generate billable work. Your ability to do this today would impact you decision as to whether you should starts your own firm, or join an already established one. If you have a network of contact from whom you feel you could generate billable projects that you could successfully execute, the starting your own firm makes sense. However, building those relationships and developing your own client base is much more difficult than it sounds. If you don't have that kind of network, or would feel uncomfortable at this point asking people in your network to hire you for a project, then you might be better off joining an established firm and trying to work your way up.

The "will" issue is a little trickier to assess, but just as important. Consulting is a very challenging business. Often a consultant works very long hours on projects, and works very hard against tight schedules to complete a project. Extensive travle may also be required; the typical consulting model is Monday through Thursday at the client site, with Friday in the office. People who don't truly love the work can get burned out pretty quickly. If you are starting you own business this is an even more important issue, because you'll only be able to make the business pay by really putting yourself out there and working hard to both win clients and execute the work.

The consulting field is pretty crowded, with specialists in every niche and generalist firms cutting across every aspect of business. If you have something unique to offer and can communicate the value of it clearly, have the ability to build a client base and are willing to invest a lot of your time in building a business, starting a firm might be for you. If you're more into execution, actually doing the work somebody else finds, you may want to try to work at a firm for a year or two, and see if you love it enough to stick it out. If you dont have either "skill" or "will" I'd stay out of the field.
