One of my favorite books!!
I think the Ibo belief system satisfied the purpose of a religion. The tribe had set customs and guidelines for social hierarchy and marriage laws.
You should read Chris Abani's "GraceLand". A bit violent at times, but it tells the story of the breaking of the kola nut, which is a prominent feature in Ibo religious tradition.

This is a great book! Now, I read the book awhile ago - but here goes - I think the religion the Ibo practiced did provide them with guidelines - example: they were taught that twins were evil, and they killed them at birth. The main character lives by those guidelines, and his whole life is thrown into question when his own son questions those guidelines and converts to Christianity.
I'm not sure it provided them with a meaning of life. However, when you live in a culture where survivial is paramount, its possible that philosophical thinking (like the meaning of life) falls by the wayside. I hope this helps a bit - but I better not be doing your homework!

Religion was not made to explain things like "hmmm... who the hell made all this crap?". Religion was made when man collected his fear and turned it into a God, and in vain hope, tried to control the fears by worshiping them.
