He has to grip those vines with his arms AND his legs when he is swinging through the jungle. This gripping the vines with his legs repeatedly has caused some damage to part of his anatomy and the result is a lowered testosterone level wich causes several changes in his appearance. Most of the movies of him were shot when he was young and the most noticable effect is of course the loss of facial and chest hair. Another effect not so noticable when he was young was that his breasts began to enlarge as he got older. Tarzan of course was the first to notice it and he tried to stop the growth of his breasts by beating on them. His voice also began to get higher so he tried to exercise his voice everyday to keep it in the more manly lower range, but it still has quite a waiver when he yells and often goes in and out of the upper range. I've seen footage of him doing these exercises simultaneously. Perhaps you have too? Beating his chest and yelling with his tone range obviously out of his control? Sad really. There are no films of Tarzan as an old man because he refused to be filmed. I can't say that I blame him. He finished life as a high voiced, hairless, large breasted freak. In the end even Jane had left him. He spent his last few years living in poverty at the Actor's Equity Home in Kenya.

First of all, Tarzan is a fictional movie character, based on a fictional cartoon/ comic book character. When watching movies, which are for entertainment purposes, one must suspend one's reality belief system. However, if Tarzan really existed , then he could use that really sharp knife he carries to shave with. Living in a tropical environment, his skin would be very tough and leathery, and he would be able to "dry shave", (not use shaving cream or soap). But he could also use aloe from the tropical plants for a shaving lubricant if he had to. Fun question.
