How do you clean the inside of a sewing machine? I've read that you aren't supposed to use an air can, as it can cause debris to be caught further inside. Do shops clean them and for how much and would it be done while I wait?

Sometimes using a small brush, like a toothbrush might help but it can't get in all the places you need. My advice is to get it professionally cleaned, and usually they need to keep it for a few days (depending on their schedule), you'll be impressed how much of a difference it makes when it is cleaned by them instead of trying to do it yourself. They know all the nooks and crannies, where to oil, etc. It can cost anywhere from $35 and up, depending on the model, extra options you have, and how soon you need it back.

Happy Sewing again!

I have two newer Berninas and two vintage Singers. I use a soft bristle paintbrush that I buy at a hobby store to get the lint, etc out of the bobbin case and to dust around the foot/needle assembly and the bobbin winder. I also wipe the exterior down with a tack cloth.

I have been warned by the Bernina dealer (a very honest lady who gives good advice) not to use canned air.

So, since I do a lot of sewing, I take them in once every year to the shop to have them professionally cleaned. The technician at my local shop only comes on Monday and you get your machine back the next week. I imagine prices vary according to where you are located but my shop charges $45 apiece for the Berninas.

Get a soft brush, remove the bobbin and dust for broken threads. They don't always come up when you pull them.
Look under the bobbin carriage to find dust, lint, thread and get it out of there.
While getting knotted up the thread may have loosened the tension on the bobbin so put a bobbin in and pull gently to see if it comes off easily, if not loosen or tighten the screw on the bobbin case itself.
Oil the machine.
I don't know of anyone who works while you wait because they don't want you to kn ow they work for five minutes, thread the machine and collect forty to seventy dollars depending on where you live. So, call around and I think you'll find you can clean it just brushing it with a soft brush and a few drops of oil.

in case you prefer to maintain that is fee, do no longer something. I had a White, treadle device that selection into initially painted white with decals. I additionally had a Singer treadle that I refinished to apply in a mattress room as a table. It even had a steel field with distinctive ft for particular initiatives. At any cost, even however the White device substitute into chipped, yellowed and the decals have been diminished, I have been given extra money for it than the Singer because of the authenticity. in case you watch HGTV's vintage Roadshow, they aid you already know the comparable element... the alternative is yours....
