A lame answer would be: the egg because dinosaurs had eggs before chickens did.

A follow up would be: its a loaded question. When you ask if the chicken or the egg came first, that sounds like one of the two simply appeared in this world.

However, the word "chicken" is a human classiffication of the bird that evolved from a chicken-like animal. Therefore when you say chicken or chicken egg, you have to define the traits that would allow a chicken to be called a chicken.
That chicken-like animal may have laid eggs before it evolved into a "chicken" or the egg laying reproduction system may have come after the "chicken" came about. The first possibility seems to be a better answer because chickens were not the only animals to lay eggs.

Oo...upon editting, Finndo's link makes sense also: If the chicken-like creature laid an egg, the genetic make up of the egg is what allows it to become a the chicken. The egg was the product of /DNA shuffling between the parents and when the egg came out, it can be classified as a chicken while the parents were not chicken themselves.

Again, the point is, define the traits of a chicken.

Which came first - the chicken or the egg? "The chicken" came first - in the sentence of the question. If the question is phrased differently, the answer is different.

The Chicken. If you are a creatonist, you would believe that god created the chicken, because it wouldnt have made sense to have an egg first. If you are an evolutionist than you believe that a chicken evolved from a former chickenlike creature. This creature laid an egg that hatched into a chicken. It couldnt have been a chicken egg because their was no such thing as a chicken. Therefore it doesnt matter if you are a creatonist or an evolutionist, the chicken came first.

Well, Studies have shown that life started with a single cell organism. This was figured by the adaptation that they grew to multiple cells which were mammals. So the correct answer would be "The chicken came before the egg.

the chicken came first because eggs have to have heat and so if the egg came first the chicken in the egg would die.

Therefore it's the egg who came first

I think a chicken and a rooster were here first (and the rooster *came* first... sorry, had to)
But I think the chicken had to be here first to incubate the egg and let it hatch.
