Depends on what your looking for.

Toshibas are nice but if you have a problem the tech support screws you over:

I like Dells personally. Although they have a lot of crap trials preinstalled on the computer (moreso than others), it is easy to remove and the hardware is cheap, especially if you google "Dell Coupons" before you buy.

XPS is Dell but you won't need it unless you want to play video games.

Gateways are generally less reliable (6 drives in 1 year- 2 computers, both Gateways) and I cannot personally speak for HP or Acer).

Apple is a great alternative. The hardware is nice (at a slight premium), it looks good, no viruses and easy to use.

Some people are fans of Sony computers, I'm not. They usually cost more than their competitors and the reliability has come down in recent years.

I am personally typing this from a newer (2006) Dell B130 with the 1.5ghz Pentium M, DVD-DL/CD-RW drive, and 1GB of RAM. Taxed and shipped it was a few bucks under $1000 and it is great, no problems. (Make sure if you do buy a Dell, buy the "Recovery CD's" they offer for $9- completely worth it, if your hard drive tanks or you need to reinstall a program, your out of luck without them).

Hope this helps!

The Hp's are really nice.

I just just got the hp5000, and its real nice. it is widescreen, has a dvd/cd recorder. It also has a great movie system for entertainment.

Hp has a lot of different laptops.

the 8000, and (maybe) 4000 have built in cameras, and i'm sure there are laptops that are just simple, and cheap.

The mouse is a lot easier to use then any of the macs or dell's i have used.

Depends on what you want to do. Toshiba's are known to be good and I haven't heard anything bad about Dell's. Apple laptops are easy to use if you don't plan on running a lot of Windows based applications.

I recommend an HP because of their excellent durability and customer service. It's not the sexiest machine out there but it gets the job done. I've had one for four years and have not had any problems. Another vendor worth looking at is Toshiba.

I have a Dell, and it's great. I wanted a small, lightweight, but fast computer-- and that's what I got.
