Well, you can get those cheapo ones thats not branded. I have a 512mb one and suprisingly it works pretty well for the past year or so. My battery can last for a whole week or two... and its still working well.

iPods are really stupid at the price they cost and i want to congratulate for ignoring iPods cuz they are scratchy and delicate to handle if u want to know the alternatives of iPod
Don't buy iPod's ,they r just show off.Ever wondered why they r so famous because before iPods they were no hard drive based player s but even those flash ones were bulkier and expensive than today's.And they were the one to introduce the hard drive based which became famous overnight.
Go for Creative Zen Vplus(will be released very soon)(zen V availabe without video)
It has got 1gb & 2gb ver
pros:compact,battery effective,bright display,video playback,decent software ,fm,fm recording,voice recording,in line reccording, (fantastic alternative to iPod nano )
cons:display is not so clear under sunlight,

Try creative neeon really cheap cuz it has all the functions of zen
v excepting video but only $90 and any time better than iPod
