Not a good idea. Most washing up liquids make a lot of bubbles, whereas tablets and dishwasher liquid doesn't. If you fill the dispenser with washing up liquid, you're going to be looking like Mickey Mouse in Fantasia!

I wouldn't recommend it.
Regular dish washing liquid foams up more than the stuff for the dish washer.
It will likely make a big mess. The suds will overflow out of the dishwasher all over the floor. Or at least that is what happenned when I tried it.

Noooooo! It will foam up like you wouldn't believe. If it were the same, we wouldn't have to buy the powder/tablets! BTW the powder sold in big boxes is cheaper than the tablets and you can gauge how much you need based on how dirty the dishes are and the hardness of your local water. We have v. soft water so I often use about half what the instructions say, and it works fine. The tablets force you to use a set amount.
Do NOT put liquid in your DW, you will live to regret it. It will probably flood the place and break down.

No, it never is ok to do that. You seriously run the risk of ruining yout dishwasher, and making a big mess in your kitchen. Dishwasher stuff costs like 3$ or less, just go buy some more stuff. Otherwise, if you cant get to the store for whatever reason, let them sit in there, or go and WASH them yourself. People still do that you know? Wash their own dishes.

No! cos the stuff that goes into a dishwasher is low-foaming. Even a little bit of ordinary washing up liquid will foam like mad and possible make you dishwasher flood.

Not on it's own or as so many of the others have said FOAM CITY!!!! However, if you use like 3 little drops with 2 tablespoons of vinegar if you are in a really tight pinch until you can get more regular stuff, the vinegar reduces the amount of bubbles and actually reduces spotting on glassware.

If you are referring to normal dish detergent as in the type you would use to wash dishes in an open sink, don't use it. The problems is suds. There will be too many for your dishwasher to handle. It probably won't cause permanent damage, but it may cause a mess and not properly clean the dishes.

You would have to use a very small amount. I don't know if the dishes will get cleaned, but if you use more than a couple drops the dishwasher will overflow with soap suds...

Do mean liquid dishwashing soap like Dawn or Joy? No! Don't do it. The dishsoap will make too many suds, leak out, and cause "suds lock". Only use dishwasher detergent.
