This may sound silly but here goes. I am of mixed heritage black and white. My husband is white. When I was filling out the form for my newborn daughters birth certificate, it asked for her race and I really didnt know what to put down. What is her race?

I am Caucasian and my hubby is Puerto Rican (Hispanic). I was told that the minority was to be considered my children's race, so they are Hispanic. Mulatto is white and black, which your baby is. If that isn't an option, I'd go with African-American.

It's about time they do away with these labels. Too many people consist of so many different races and nationalities... it's time to be called the "human race" and skip the rest! JMO

Your daughter would fall under the multi-racial category. You can put bi-racial or mixed races if you want but technically speaking, majority of her is white (50 % from your husband + 25 % from you= 75 % white) so if she wants to be identifed as white that's fine but also let her acknowledge the 25% of her that is black.

This is so funny that you asked this, because I was in the same situation while I was in the hospital. First off, I think you would check White, since that is the race of your hubby. I am black, and my husband is Puerto Rican and Black. He typically checks "other" or Latino when asked his race. Well, anyway, I didnt know what to check for my daughter. I didnt want to check African American because really she isnt. I couldnt check Hispanic because, again, she isnt. "Other" is always the best bet, but I have to figure this stuff out soon because when she gets older and has to do it herself --- my child needs to know what IS her race. lol.

You are not silly for asking. I wouldn't know what to put down either. I would try to contact someone at the Division of Vital Statistics (I think that is what it is called) it is where you get a copy of birth certificates. They can answer better than anyone on here. I hope you get your answer soon.

Multi- or bi- racial. Other than those times that you're filling out a document asking for race, don't spend a whole lot of time worrying about what race she is. Just make sure she has access to education on all parts of her heritage.

According to American standards the child is considered whatever race the father is. Therefore her race would be 'white' as far as her birth certificate.

i would put down black if you are in the us. Even if she looks white her being black on paper will give her extra money for college. Lower standards to get into college. And many other things that minority's get. you don't have to be a very large part minority to count for these things but having that race on the birth certificate will make getting stuff so much simpler.

I would have got into the college i wanted too without having to go to the local one for a year if I was a minority, or if i had done a homework assignment in high school. I was just below the cut off but when i calculated it the extra points for being a minority would have got me in. Yes i know i was a slacker in high school and got bad grades but still if i was a minority slacker i would have been in with my sat score.

i have a similar problem iam half italian and half puerto rican,so i dont know weather to put hispanic or caucasin in,usually they have a box that says other and then i write down italian and puertorican,it sounds like your baby is mostly white and only half black seeing your husband is 100percent white and you are only half black,i would check mixed race or other.

Other is the best answer. According to the original constitution you have to have 1/6th black in you to be considered black.
