In my opinion, there is no "best", as new spyware is coming out all the time, so the "best" program may change frequently. Because of that, I download and installed multiple free spypare programs that I run at least once per month. Each program finds spyware that each of the other programs do not find. Below are my suggestions (for WinXP users):

Microsoft Windows Defender:

Lavasoft Adaware:

Spybot - Search & Destroy:

Good Luck!

When it comes to anti-spyware software, you ought to use 2 even 3 programs. Here are 3 of the best:

1. Adaware
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

2. Spysweeper
http://www.webroot.com/

3. Windows Defender

NOTE: While it is beneficial to have several anti-spyware, IT IS NOT good to have more than 1 anti-virus program, as they would conflict with each other and cause problems.

I am sure there are many anti-spyware programs out there. One has to decide which is best for them. I suggest you go onto the internet and search and read up on the various anti-spyware programs available.

Spysweeper is one of the best, but I would recommend using multiple anti-spyware programs.

I personally use spysweeper, adaware, spybot and zonealarm pro and a firewalled router.

I surf the net constantly. and I find that the more protection I use the safer my machine is. I also use both IE and firefox browsers and constantly switch between both to ensure my system is running smoothly.

It takes a lot of work to protect yourself online and if you don't, then expect to have problems! (i.e. viruses, etc.)

p.s. I used to earn a living custom building pc's, but now, almost all of my side gigs involve restoring pc's infected by viruses, trojan horses, keyloggers, etc. etc. It's a very profitable time for me.

do yourselves a favor and protect yourself the best you can. If not, be prepared to pay a nice sum retrieving all your personal files.

Spybot Search and Destroy...

You can find it here: http://www.safer-networking.org/

I've also been hearing good things about Ewido at http://free.grisoft.com

And if you're willing to pay for the service, AdAware Pro is one of the best out there... but I'm not fond of the Agent that stays running, and I have to minimize everytime I boot up Windows.

You can find AdAware at: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/
