There are suckers living in this beautiful earth. Being honest or not, "like and dislike" attitude is strong in organisation. I'll give you two point of views.
Some subordinates being liked because they're good at their job and some because they're good being maggots.
Some bosses hates suckers and they're tend to be fair even when they playing favorites, some are just people who loves other people to kiss their as*.
Either way, don't even mind to play tricks to be a favorite. Being great in your job shoud be enough to win your boss' heart. And if it don't, trust me, you deserve a better boss.

Because the bosses are playing favorites. All bosses, even the ones who truly believe that they don't, play favorites. Why do you think there are so many "brown nosers?" Because it works. Unfortunately, you have to learn to play the game or get out, one way or the other.
