What with a whole batch of wars in the Middle East that could at any time ignite into a major regional confrontation, not to mention the deteriorating environment, global warming, etc, am I alone in feeling a deepening sense of unease??? (which isn't helped by the scarily huge amount of racist abuse and ignorance I see posted on this site).

As an "older" person, am I the only one to nostalgically remember the good old days of the cold war (when "mutually assured destruction" meant that no-one, not even Bush, would dare press the button first). When you might, just, be better off red than dead? And when, environmentally, we all worried about when the next ice age would arrive?

Yes Its worrying I agree. But there are still people on this planet who are good and no matter what their colour or religion still believe that this world is worth the effort of trying to make thinks better. Evil is always in the foreground making itself known by ranting and raving. While evil performs its show, good is methodically and quietly countering evils moves. It doesn't make a fuss but will eventually win. We have seen many bad things in the past, but we have seen equally as many good things, perhaps even more. I strongly believe that those who seek to make bad things happen will eventually be thwarted and made to pay the price. This world is still a beautiful place we just need to stay dogged in the determination that if we stay united eventually things can and will improve.

I too feel a very big sense of unease heading round the whole of this world right now, man is against man, racism and bigotry is worse now than it has ever been and it is so damn scary isn't it, no one trusts anyone anymore, I have heard little kids on my street say to each other when an Asian or African person approaches, "run for your life's black people carry bombs in their pockets", how sick and sad it that hey, the parents of these children are just totally instilling fear and ignorance into their child's brains and in my opinion that is just as bad as these terrorist that have been brain washed by the bigots they know or do the dirty work for, I often wonder why things have turned out how they have when as a child we had the cold war and the better to be red than dead things going on round the world, was it worth having the PC brigade in to sort out what appeared to be working perfectly well as it was, have they done more harm than good and why oh why are the governments of this world more interested in what is happening in other countries instead of finding proper solutions for the country they govern, please god forbid we have a WORLD war with more hatred and death for no possible reasons, we need proper safety assurances and we need them now before we all end up full of sheer hatred towards one another, may that never be part of our life's please.

Oh yeah I remember the good old days...

Like in 77 and 69 revolution was in the air
When the head of state didn’t play guitar,
Not everybody drove a car,
When music really mattered and radio was king,
When accountants didn’t have control
And the media couldn’t buy your soul
And computers were still scary and we didn’t know everything
When popstars still remained a myth
And ignorance could still be bliss
And when God Save the Queen she turned a whiter shade of pale
When my mom and dad were in their teen
and anarchy was still a dream
and the only way to stay in touch was a letter in the mail
When record shops were on top
and vinyl was all that they stocked
and the super info highway was still drifting out in space
kids were wearing hand me downs,
and playing games meant kick arounds
and footballers still had long hair and dirt across their face

I was born too late to a world that doesn’t care
Oh I wish I was a punk rocker with flowers in my hair

I too feel very uneasy about the situation today! I have small children and wonder what kind of future is in store for them! Racial intolerance appears to be at all time high, caused by the mindless few, yet the large majority of people from all races and religions are incredibly tolerant and want peace! The level of racial abuse on answers makes me sad and worried! As a nation, everyone from every culture should stand together and show the mindless idiots that we are united and no amount of terrorism will prevent that!

At 44 I, too, long for the "good ole days" of Watergate, Viet Nam, anti-war protests, draft dodgers, disciplined children at home and in school.

Those days are gone. We can only take responsibility for our individual actions. We cannot control the government, (seems that no matter whom you vote for, they end up as crooks or creeps)

Just try to make your own little space in the universe a happy one. That is what I do. Some may say this is isolationism, but hey, I can't stop the terrorists, I can't make Isreal & the Hezbollah shake hands, I can't stop the rising price of gasoline.

I can only change the things I can control. So that is what I do.

Tell it like it is.... We have a new enemy, one that is unseen and unknown.....terrorist. We know where they are and who they are but no further information is available until terror is upon us. How do we combat fear, how can we confront the enemy and where the heck are they hiding???? We should be afraid and we should learn to stand together as the outcome is "annihilation of the infidel". I'm older also and sometimes I truly believe we have lived through entirely too much history....

In response to the racism and ignorance remark - preach on, I am stunned by the remarks and lack of knowledge from so many. Thank you for a very valid entry and for sharing the sense of foreboding that many of us are experiencing.

Theres is always a war going on somewhere in the world. The companies that deal in arms are one of the biggest industries in the world, rivalled only by cosmetics.

So there is never going to be 'peace' as long as men make money from politics, mass murder, blood and death..

It is a worrying time indeed. White people having a go at Muslims and anyone who is vaguely non-white, extremists blowing themselves up etc and all the racism and hatred, where does it come from? Maybe we should be trying to set an example and ask these people about their beliefs, lives and cultures and they can in turn ask us. After all in my opininion I think a lot of the problems are down to fear of the unknown!
