Because wherever you are, you are very aware of the drawbacks and troubles of your present circumstances. On the other side of the fence are circumstances that are different, and from your present position, appear idyllic in comparison.
This is especially so if the side of the fence that you're looking at is a situation that you haven't yet experienced, therefore you don't know the drawbacks to that situation so far. Even if it is a side of the fence where you've been before, you may be so focused on the problems with your current situation that you only remember the good of the previous one in comparison.
I've usually found that if the problems of my present can be dealt with, that's usually the better bet, because the unknown on that other side can bite you in the butt once you get there. :)

i guess because it is human nature not to appreciate what we do have and instead we hanker after the things we dont have. we always think that what someone else has is better than what we have. This type of behaviour is displayed very often in small children. more often than not if a child is playing with a toy and sees another child with a toy then they decide that the other childs toy is better than the one that they have and will grab it from them. humans are never satisfied with what they have. in some ways that is a good thing because we always strive to be better. in other ways its not so good because if you are discontented and always wanting things you cant have then you will never be happy. the moral of this story i guess is to count your blessings and instead of looking to the people that you think are better off than yourself, give a thought to the people who are a lot worse off

I think it's human nature to want something else. It distracts one from dealing with his own issues to constantly think about the next better thing one could have. Most people do not even really know what they want or how to go about attaining it. I blame that on bad parenting and inate disposition. There are so many people telling you what you should do and want (marketing) that often it's hard to even find your own thoughts and preferences.

Because we are never satisfied with what we have. So we go looking for something bigger and better...only to discover that what we already had might have been better all along....
This concept is illustrated in the movie "Ilya 4 Ever" You should check it out. It is sub titled though.

it is like the 50 foot rule about women
they look great from 50 feet but when you get closer you see the imperfections and hear their problems
it is nice to run across the field, but don't stay for a picnic lunch
