Do you leave it running on a flat surface all day? That could cause it. Laptops are not supposed to be kept on for long periods of time. If you are going to use it like a desktop, get one of those mounts that keeps the laptop elevated, so that the heat has a way to escape.

Thats typical of toshiba laptops. I have used two others in the past and all run very hot on the bottom. More of design issue with the product than your individual laptop.

This is not unusual. Are you by any chance running UD, BOINC, SETI, or another distributed application? Laptops often run hot when you are using lots of CPU.
The other possibility is that you have collected dust and it is interfering with your airflow. You could try spraying the fan with some canned air. If you are not comfortable taking your laptop apart, you might want to have it looked at.

No, very likely the only cooling system in your laptop is a fan. You may wish to have it cleaned out if your system is overheating. Also, laptops aren't meant to be used on your lap or on any other surface where the vents might be obstructed.

laptops always get hot.
Air ciculation is a must, so dont put it on a cushion or your lap, try putting a hard backed book on your lap where the laptop can rest with it rubber feet all on the book, this will help out alot.

Dear Gina,
These other recommendations are good. Also, I recommend that you ensure that the airflow vents and fan inlets / outlets are free of dust. If you're not sure how to clean it, you might want to find a friend who does, or a computer store.

a laptop is unfortunately not meant to sit on ones lap! If it does not get air underneath it, it will get hot and shut itself down. Better referred to as a "notebook" computer.
