Before I start, I'll apologize for not knowing all the proper sewing lingo...I don't sew often! Anyway, I don't know why my needle won't take up my bobbin thread. My machine was working perfectly, then I wound some more bobbin thread when I ran out. Put the handwheel back to seweing position, threaded the bobbin correctly and put it in it's case and back into it's little compartment. But, now it's like the bobbin thread won't do anything..won't get caught around whatever it does so that my needle can grab onto it. What could I have done wrong?? It's a Janome machine, about 6 years old. I want your opinion before I decide to take it to a shop to be looked at, only to find I'm a D.A. and don't know what I'm doing!! Thanks.

Get a soft brush, remove the bobbin and dust for broken threads. They don't always come up when you pull them.
Look under the bobbin carriage to find dust, lint, thread and get it out of there.
While getting knotted up the thread may have loosened the tension on the bobbin so put a bobbin in and pull gently to see if it comes off easily, if not loosen or tighten the screw on the bobbin case itself.
Oil the machine and clean it.

I'm not familiar with Janome but I suspect that sewing machines are similar. On the bobbin, there is a tiny hole. Make sure that is up when you place it in the bobbin compartment (under the needle plate). And be sure the hole is up when you wind the bobbin. Do you have the needle threaded? If so, make sure that you hold onto the end of the thread going through the needle as you turn the hand wheel to pick up the bobbin thread. You might also want to be sure that there are no threads or other debris inside the bobbin compartment (this could prevent the bobbin thread from coming up with the needle). If these things fail, try their website. I took a quick look and they have a FAQs page and also machine support online.

Everyone else is checking the bobbin - have you checked to make sure that your top thread is threaded correctly? Specifically, make sure that you are threaded correctly in the little thing that goes up and down - sometimes not having that in place or having it slip too far back causes problems too.

Good luck! And don't give up yet!

please don't be offended...but is your bobbin loaded correctly?

I have this problem when I put the bobbin in the case backwards.

If the bobbin is loaded correctly, try completely rethreading the top thread.

If this still doesn't work you may have to take it to the shop :-(
