It's the thrill of the chase. A driver is always trying to catch up to the car ahead and then find a way around him without wrecking at 200 MPH. Then there's another one to catch.
When you do get to the front of the pack you have to hold off anyone trying to get the lead away from you. Could you do that for three or four hours?
Drag racing takes a lot of skills too but it's restricted to a straight line and it's over in seconds. The thrill is brief.
I like all types of racing but NASCAR is where the heroes come from. They always sell out so it must be a lot better than you think it is.

If you knew anything about racing you would know that it's not about the "circle" (which it's not, it can be a oval, tri-oval, road course or even a paper clip shape).
It about the skill & technique involved in passing someone at 180 mph and not wreckig yourself. Each track requires a different game plan. Some tracks it's like racing wide open down the highway, others it's like racing in stop & go traffic.
It's also about the personalities involved in the sport. All fans have a love/hate relationship with different drivers. As most people do with their favoite traditional sports team.
The sound of the motor and potential for crashes adds to the enjoyment as well. No one wants anyone to get hurt but to see a car flip 5 times in mid-air down the front stretch at Talladega is always exciting! This goes along with watching hockey for the fights!!

I know some people say that NASCAR racing is just a bunch of cars going round in a circle. To them I would ask; isn't american football just a bunch of guys running up and down a field? Of course it isn't, just like NASCAR is more than it appears. Its the thrill of seeing your driver move through the pack at 150 mph. The quickness with which the pit crew works to repair a damaged car. The rush of adrenaline you get trying to will your driver past the car ahead of him. And there is much more that makes NASCAR so fascinating. You only need to educate yourself a little about all aspects of NASCAR.

I am so tired of this question. You can look at older motor sport questions on here, and it will reveal the many other questions people have asked about "driving in circles...etc" I think people like you simply want to stir up the fans of NASCAR, which isn't going to work because this question is so old.
I am a NASCAR fan. I am 100 percent none of the stereotypes, but I enjoy NASCAR and other forms of racing. You may have your own opinion about why NASCAR is so boring, but many people (including me) disagree with you. NASCAR is as exciting as any other form of racing. It's different than other forms, but they are all equally interesting and enjoyable. People need to open their minds to new ideas and stop blindly criticizing things they barely understand.

People who ask this question obviously don't understand the sport. Fans don't just sit around waiting for a crash. Racing requires skills, logic, strategy, the drivers need to be in good physical condition and every track they race in is different. I could say the same thing about golf, "why is hitting a ball in a hole considered a sport?" Those who follow golf know that it requires more than that, it requires-skill, logic and strategy.
So people should think about it, before they ask a question that belittles a sport. Your lack of understanding does not constitute a boring sport.

Because we freaking like it! Why is OVAL such a hard thing to say? The tracks are ovals, there are also two road courses. How about this: why do so many people keep asking dumb questions similar to this one? Do you think that if you bad mouth it enough that we will stop watching it?? Well, if that's your goal you're wasting your time. You don't have to like NASCAR, but why do you have to insult it? I find NASCAR entertaining, that's why I like it.

They aren't freaking circles, they are ovals! Fine, you don't like it we get the point, why do you care enough to ask the question? Do you understand when it gives you similar questions, you CAN click on them and get your answers there! I am sick of explaining Nascar to people who can't even figure that out...no wonder they don't like Nascar, they can't keep up!
