I agree that you should consider a new laptop.

But if you want to upgrade, go in this order:
new DVD player first, make sure it's working
back up things off your HD and install the new one
then install Ubuntu
restore files from the backup that you need

Most likely you will not be able to upgrade the CPU. You can check what upgrades are possible at the toshiba website.

However OS is going to cost you min 99-149 dollars
HD around 150-200 dollars
And you should max your memory another 150-300 dollars (depending on room to grow)

Add that all up and you should just buy yourself a new 500-600 dollar laptop that will run alot better that your computer upgraded.

t depends on how you want to set up your new drive. You can connect them to the plug but you have to set up which of the two drives (DVD or CD-W) is the master and which is the slave. There should be some pins on the back of the two with plastic clips that sets this information. Remove the clips are replace them in the posstion that sets this up (refer to the drive guild should tell you this information)

Other options inculde exstral drive or replacing the DVD drive with a DVD/CD-R drive.
