This is very interesting question from a point of view of Geography. It also applies to Turkey by the way. Neither is IN Europe. So if either WERE accepted into the Union would they become part of Europe?

Conditions to join the EU, that the candidate must be a European Nation.
Egypt is not European, but a quite different race. It alliance wit the United Arab leagues, with this he identifies himself with the Arab nations.
Ancient culture, like many Arab nation, but cannot qualify. Even Turkey is debated, because part of her geological location belong the Asian Continent. Turkey is mainly Islamic country.
