It's like that parable of the starfish on the beach, isn't it?
You know, where this almighty storm washes up all these starfish. Thousands of them, all beached and dying under the hard light of the sun. Some little old fella comes tottering along, walking past hundreds of them at a time then stooping to pick up just one of the creatures and carefully putting it back in the water. He's too old and too feeble to do much more. The other fella laughs at him and asks what possible difference it makes. So the old chap holds up the starfish he's about to put back in the ocean and says: "To this one, it makes all the difference in the world".
It may be terrible twee, but there is a truth in it.
I think we can make a difference, if we really want to.

Yes, but to make a difference you need some backing and critical mass / momentum because of sheer amount of work required.
We do live in a materialistic society where people do not necessary think of cooperation as the only thing or even as a good thing.
Simply put, some may think that competitions lower costs and push efficiency. The socialists thinking is not exactly popular, but the self motivation and reward through personal excellence models are.
Starting a social change remains very difficult.

I like to think I've made a difference in this life. I've introduced 2 people who have now been married 5 years, I comfort my grandmother who is at the end of her life, and I've even tried to talk people on Yahoo Answers out of killing themselves. Just live one day at a time and do your best.

Yes absolutely. If your are tasked with leading a nation - you can make a difference. If you are tasked with cleaning up your neighborhood, taking care of a sick person, or just speaking a kind word to a sad and depressed store clerk - you can indeed make a difference every single day.
The challenge = we must take the focus off of ourselves.

Yes, we all can make a difference if we just look around and see what needs doing. Even the tiniest gesture during a day can brighten somebody else's life.

idk. i think 10 years ago a smile would make a difference, but not today. With everything going on in the world (war, gas prices, global warming, crimes, etc.) a simple smile wont gte the job done. I think it is possible to make a difference, but i dont think its as easy as it used to be
