The idea behind the movie was to show you how layered the mind is.
In his real life he had some good and bad experiences.
He was a spoiled, woman chasing, jerk in his real life before he had that woman try to kill him in the car.
After he spent time trying to heal and get his life back he decided it wasn't working for him so he found a place to have him frozen till they could heal him right in the future and committed suicide.
That's the part where in his dream state he blocks out what he knows is real and life seems to be good again till his mind knowing the truth makes him start having bad things happen again. Instead of admitting he killed himself it shows him killing the girl to force him to deal with his anger and all the bad things he did to people.
Finally he has to be saved again because he's going crazy. So they come in to wake him up from his dream state with the truth of his real life again.
He then ends the movie with the choice to live again.
Bottom line is this...you can't really lie to yourself, and when all is said and done, happiness is not "things" is the real relationships you have and only love really matters.
*Edit..and yes don't live your life as a selfish jerk, Karma is self defeating behavior that makes you destroy yourself because you have really hurt others.

I watched it and understood it but it is a complex type of thing as far as explaining. OK so he thought he killed the one girl right. Well that wasn't the case. Basically you have to remember that the whole movie was a "dream" so to speak. He was in a world that he basically bought and created for himself. Well there were glitches and that guy was kinda following him trying to let him know that something was wrong. All these problems he thought were happening weren't really happening. That it was all just a "dream" world and things weren't right at the moment. I haven't watched it for awhile so can't get too detailed but hopefully that will at least help.

Yes it's really easy to understand.
After he had met Sophia and his friend at the nightclub, in reality they had gotten together and went off and left David (Tom Cruise) in the street where he fell asleep.
After that, he had taken an overdose but not before signing up to have his body frozen once he dies and placed into a 'dream state'.
When he did die and his body was in a dream state, all of what happened after Sophia woke him up on the pavement was a dream and not reality.
Understand?
