It's a stand up CPC that won't work, I now have a laptop and someone told me to "just take the HD" (hard drive I assume) "out and run it along side the one in your laptop". Can this be done easily by me or will it have to goto a shop, the laptop s still under warrenty, so I'm thinking it's a job for the shop I got it from.

I'm not very computer minded so take care.

The answers given so far are easy to do but so is changing a fuse in a plug. But neither are easy if you don't know what to do or no one has shown you. Only when you see someone do it will you say geez that is easy, I could have done that if only I had known exactly what to do!
So you can either have a play, get someone to show you & then leave it with you to do, or take it to a shop & let them do it. Like I said, it is an easy procedure, so it should not take the shop long....the usual charge where I live for taking & saving data from a hard drive when the computer is broken is around £25. Seems alot for what they actually do, but they are not charities.

You can get the picture (and any other files you want) off the hard drive by taking in out of the computer and puttingit into another computer as a second hard drive. Unfortunately, because of the size difference between a desktop and a laptop hard drive, you can not put the desktop hard drive into your laptop. You will have to use another desktop.

With the second desktop turned off, you would unplug to the two cables that go into the CD drive of the computer and plug them into your hard drive. Boot the computer and you should be able to see your hard drive as a second drive on that computer ( a "D" or "E" drive).

You should then be able to copy any files you want to a CD, DVD, memory stick, etc. Just a simple drag and drop from your hard drive to the other device. (Since you have the CD drive unhooked at the moment, you might have to drag them the hard drive of that PC and then after you have reconnect the CD drive, burn them to a CD.)

Once done, power off the PC, remove your hard drive and reconnect the CD drive.

After you have everything backed up from your hard drive, you may put in back into your PC and reinstall Windows without having to worry about losing anything.

Well, if you're able to take the hard drive out, yourself, do that, and then get yourself an external drive adapter, and you can install it in that, and connect it to the laptop by a usb cable.
It's not that difficult.
However, you might take the CPC that's not working to the shop and let them find out if there's some easily fixable problem.
Oh, and another suggestion, when you DO get access to the pics again, make backups..

you can't use the PC hd in a laptop (maybe its possible, but its very hard then) the best thing to do is find a friend with a working PC and ad the hd to his PC (set as slave) then copy the photo's to a CD and delete everything from the HD (and give it to your friend) that way 2 people are happy (you have the photos and your friend gets a new (extra) HD)

Or go to a PC shop and ask them to copy the photos to a CD (they will probably do that for a good price since (for them) its maybe 15 mins work)

next time burn the photos (and all important documents) to CD when you can (or monthly) so that you won't have this problem again (even harder with a laptop)

in case you do no longer plan to repair it (it would desire to be something minor), get rid of the annoying force. verify to confirm if there are any charitable companies (church homes, Goodwill, Salvation military, etc.) that are prepared to settle for it as a donation . they might use it for areas, or setting up a sparkling force and restore it to be utilized by applying elderly or indigent purchasers. If no longer, verify with to confirm in the adventure that your city or county has a software to recycle elctronics, or if there are any particular standards for paying for rid of it. in case you won't be able to get better archives from the annoying force, ruin it (a hammer works properly). this might look after any own archives that is saved on it. no longer the rest interior the laptop might have any archives saved on it.

yeah, that someone is right, but be careful, because hard disks r very sensitive, if u drop it or hit it against something, it can be damaged. so take it out carefully and hook it up to your laptop, and transfer all the data you want.

good luck.

BirkenheadBl... if you are not computer minded then do not do-it yourself. Best ask your shop because your laptop still under warranty. If you do it your warranty will be terminated.
