I read online to jiggle the steering wheel to try to release the steering wheel lock, but since DH decided to take the keys with him anyway, I haven't had a chance to try it. Any other ideas to try when he gets home and before I have to take it to a mechanic?

What I'm most concerned about is the fact that the wheels are perfectly straight, not locked against the curb or anything. I'm afraid that the steering wheel jiggle won't work, since everything I've read has said that the steering locks up because the wheels are turned hard. Any other ideas on what it could be or estimates of what it will cost to fix if that doesn't solve the problem? Hopefully he'll make it home at lunch time and leave me the keys so I can fiddle with it.

The problem is the wheel was turned when it was parked and now the steering lock is placing pressure against the ignition switch preventing you from turning the ignition... mine does this all the time. Take the pressure off the steering wheel and turn the ignition key. Unless the ignition has gotten messed up somehow this WILL fix your problem.

Some time the steering wheel lock just gets stuck After you try Jiggle and slight pressure left and right and the lock still wont turn purchase a complete steering lock with key cyl. Then go by a locksmith to get it keyed the same as your truck. Also get the break off bolts to re secure it to the steering tilt mechanism. Use a sharp pointed punch and hammer to turn out the old break off bolts.

I agree with STONECOAST420. When you get the keys just go out and insert the key and while applying a little pressure jiggle the steering wheel. This is a common problem with ALL makes of vehicles after they get a certain amount of wear and tear.

Thats really all you can do, when you get ahold of some keys, just turn the wheel enough so the pressure is off the steering lock, that should do it.
