Hi means high. Like in Hi-Fi, which stands for high fidelity.
Its origins as a greeting go back to 1847, when Sir Edmund Madeuppa discovered a race of pygmy people in North Yorkshire, England.
The first reaction of the pygmy people on seeing an average sized adult was 'High', and Sir Edmund mistook it for their version of 'Hello'. True story.
