It's 'popular' to be mean. Always has been. The thing is, the way society works, is if you aren't buying the hottest thing, having the best body, wearing the most beautiful jewelry, etc... you're no one. Life... at least secular Western life... is all about wanting to be part of the 'in-crowd', and if you aren't, then you're lower on the ladder, and worthy of being looked down upon.
Think about it... who do we celebrate in society? Those who are true to themselves, wearing the clothes that they enjoy, doing the things they like to do? No. Society celebrates the celebrities... those who are little more than pretenders, those who wear the top-of-the-line clothes, drive top-of-the-line cars, can afford the cosmetic surgery to ensure they look 28 for the rest of their lives, and a trainer to keep their body that young, and so on.
And so, the trend trickles down into 'normal' society, that if you're not a 'celebrity' in your job, you're just a number; or if you're not a 'celebrity' in your school, you're worthy of scorn.
Think about it... what are those popular girls doing... are they 'being their own person'? Or are they just the next generation of pretenders, just like the actors and artists they emulate?
It's a herd-mentality, I suppose... stick with the herd and no one gets hurt by outsiders, 'cuz there's 'tough guys' in the herd to protect you... be an outsider, and the herd sees you as a potential threat to be rid of.
And hey... don't feel belittled by what others think. I was a Hessian in High School, and well over a decade later, I still am to an extent, even despite the falling from 'pop culture' (lol) that metal had, when Headbanger's Ball was taken off the air. ...and I can't help but laugh when people tell me 'disco is dead'... 'cuz it's not about what others think... it's 'bout what makes you happy.

You answered your own question - they're mean. And more than being mean, they probably have very low self-esteems. It's high school - that sort of dynamic existed long before emo music ever hit the scene.
Don't worry about it too much, college is a hundred million times better than high school for the very reason that most colleges don't have that weird social hierarchy. Another big secret is the less you care about people teasing you, the less they do it...it just isn't entertaining enough to keep up or something.
Best wishes

Thats life. I was goth in high school. Congratulate yourself for marching to the beat of a different drum, but get used to it. They don't change. Be glad you can be yourself without their approval. Deep down they probably wish they had the self will to go outside the group, but then they'd be the ones getting made fun of. You know the answer to this question. Don't doubt yourself. Just give them starburst spiked with acid, they might get it then. Even if not, it would be fun to watch ;). Good luck.

it's ironic, but the "emo" girls are nt actually true to themselves. just like "goths", the emos pretend to be non-conformists, but instead conform to a different standard. that is why they are so easily catagorized. These popular girls tend to pick on the obvious hypocracy on this. they use it as a source of power. if you really were folowing your own path, you wouldn't be easily catagorized in some group of people. try truely being your own person. ignore fashion, the opinions of others, and your urge to fit in.

Right, I'm not emo, I'm not anything!
i wear abercrombie and fitch/Bench and other clothes like that. I wear them because I like them not because it puts me into a category. Stop stereotyping! I know lots of poeple from lots of different walks of life and clothing styles and people who you describe to be popular girls can be just as true to themselves as 'emo' girls. Just try and get to know a few more people.

personally i wouldn't say that it's just the emo girls that are true to themselves, in fact, Emo is just another clique, just like Popular, Jock, Nerds, etc. Emo just happens to be a lighter, punkier goth.
Why do popular girls put them down? because thats what popular girls do. they put down everyone that isn't like them. and it's dumb, but thats what popular girls do. and yes, pop girls are idiotic. one month they're singing along with britney spears wearing pink lip gloss and rhinestone belly shirts, the next month they've got sweat wristbands on, wearing vans, listening to fallout boy and carrying skateboards. i think iit's ridiculious, to base your entire life off of what someone else says is cool, and to tell yourself that its how you should live, but hey whatever. if it makes them happy to follow fads, whatever. me personally, i'm not Emo, i'm not pop. i'm me. one day i'm a pink goth, the next day i'm a fire fighter pulling someone out of a building. the thing is, be true to yourself, not what someone else says is cool.
