Obvious answer is don't use P2P but I guess that won't work...

PeerGuardian's an effective barrier of IP addresses, and it's open source.

I think you can set it as a Windows service, so the kids won't even know it's there.

The viruses are usually small files (too small for being what they pretend to be), or attached/embedded in downloaded programs.

Norton is pretty good at spotting a virus, because it scans as the file is downloaded. BUT sometimes it can miss something that is buried deep inside a compressed or zipped file.

Best advice, eliminate downloading .exe files. Be careful with .bat, .bin etc. Check what is inside a zipped file, BEFORE it is extracted. DON'T extract html files along with games etc. They are a direct link to a website, could be dodgy. Only take out what is needed. Example, if you download a gameboy game, just extract the .gba file. NOTHING ELSE.

Set the p2p sharing and shut down settings manually. And I would only recomend Limewire. For the moment it is reportedly free of spyware. You could also suggest downloading by bit torrent.

And show them how to configure their firewall settings to allow downloading and sharing on an open port, which should be set to close once the p2p program is shut down.

Apart from that, tell them if anything looks too good to be true for sharing, it probably is.

Well if the kids are dumb enough to be unable to configure a firewall to run with a P2P app, then they deserve to be infected by trojans and viruses. ZoneAlarm does allow sharing, you just need to open the concerned port being used by the P2P app. You could help them out by setting up ZoneAlarm for them, since you'r the designated customer support.

good luck.
