That's a good question. There is no way one can learn anything if one does what you describe.
However, both sides do the abusing, and both sides tend to gravitate towards others who share their beliefs. I have been called a "neocon" by people from your side of the spectrum, just because I don't protest the war. They assume I'm a Republican, just because I don't hate Bush.
I try to be moderate in my views, though I do lean towards conservatism. If this makes me a "neocon", so be it. I would rather be called that than many other things, and at least it separates me from the people on your side of the spectrum who are hateful, ignorant, and intolerant.
And oh yes, some people from your side are VERY hateful, ignorant and intolerant. Some people from the "right" side are that way too.
The way I look at it is this: If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem.
Especially in our present situation. There is no middle ground anymore. One can be moderate, oh yes, but either they're part of the solution, or part of the problem. Me? I'm trying to be part of the solution.
Besides, I will never actually "answer" a person who isn't respectful towards my beliefs. I'll just give them the "solution or problem" response, and that's it. I'm not going to waste my time trying to explain myself to people who either say "liberals suck" or "warmongering neocons" in their questions. I will, however, pity them, that their perspective is so narrow-minded that that's all they can see.
Both conservatives and liberals are needed in today's society. Not one or the other. I'll listen to a person with an opposing view, so long as they don't resort to name-calling.
I started a conversation with a liberal on here, and it was going fine until they starting calling me "naive" and "ignorant". I wasn't insulting them, why did they feel it necessary to insult me?
Both sides have something to bring to the table. I respect them, until they are disrespectful.

I never learn anything until I fully consider it.I am a Spiritual Christian,And I would like you to consider: The sun,Never exploding,Never sending off a huge solar flare like a rocket propelling it at us or away from us out of orbit. Or those clouds that you can fly through, fall through, yet they pick up enough water to flood states. Why do they pick it up at all? do they need it? Or are they simply fulfilling their programming to keep the vegetation green and supplying oxygen for living creatures to breath.Mind you a pond of water 20' x 20' x 1" weighs approx.2000 lbs., about 200 gallons to me that is extremely impressive. May GOD Bless You.

No. Calling me a NEOCON because I am a conservative is a prime example. My grandfather fought the Nazis from Normandy thru the duration of the war. I am a veteran, I work in public safety as a 911 operator and save lives for a living. I also believe my country comes before my personal well being, I believe in God, I believe in the war in Iraq and against terror, I am against immunity for illegal aliens, I'm for affordable health care, against life long welfare recipients, for your right to disagree, and believe that anyone who is offended by seeing a cross or the 10 commandments, offends to easy to be in public. I'm not offended by public dispays of others religion or a public announcement of atheism. I am offended by a system that riminals more rights than their victims.

No, people defending their views is OK, as long as they allow that others may not share them.
