Self respect comes when one is no longer a stranger to himself, otherwise many people fail to understand their role play and hence lack correct perception. Ego is the feeling of ones existence as a separate entity, that is an entity separated from the 'whole'. The whole here means the Universal Consciousness of which the individual consciousness is only a part and the parts do not have any separate existence. Anything short of this is called nescience or ignorance in Indian philosophy. So, ego is the result of this ignorance which is gradually removed with wisdom born out of ones experiences in life. Ego plays a very dominant role in human behaviour. But the philosophic truth that it is only a veil of ignorance and the reality is that an unknown force is getting things done according to its own predetermined scheme, called destiny. But by self knowledge when one identifies himself as the instrument of the Universal Consciousness one ceases to be himself and the individual consciousness merges with the Whole. Then we hear them calling themselves as God, and that is godhead or Satchidananda that is the Truth, the Consciousness and the Bliss merging in One - the ultimate or Brahmam, also known as Kaivalyam.

Hanging on to their self respect is an excuse used by some when they fail to do what they could have done but didn't do when the need arose.
It quickly becomes a coveted possession; those who like to say they have it grudge sharing it with anybody else because in a great many senses, self respect is the first rung on the highly competetive ladder which leads to some kind of puerile moral high ground. It confers the right to criticise others to the shallow and the small-minded, you see. An example:
A woman has trouble paying the rent. She could sleep with the landlord, and by way of payment he'll write off the debt. But instead she chooses not to and ends up out on the street. In the flat above her, another woman has slept with the landlord and has quite a nice life because she did what needed to be done when the need arose.
So who should have the most self respect out of the two?
My vote goes to the woman who did what needed to be done.
Moralisers would probably vote for the stupid woman sitting destitute out on the street.
There. See?
Self Respect.
A favourite excuse of idiots the world over :o)

When the question pope up the screen I felt like WOW! their is someone who is interested on this topic. Selfrespect to me is like something you ask for but hard to give others one need to respect the selfrespect a person have for himself only then will the person get respected and will respect himself to. It is the dominative instinct of human that pulls us back in respecting someone whereas we demands maximum respect from others. Respecting oneself and others also will be the best way to repect each other and that alone is the explaination of self respect. You can go on and ask yourself to respect yourself if you respect others thats more like a civilized citizen of this evil world.

Self-respect is the sense of dignity to one's own self. That is the minimum common dignity which one must have, in the face of any situation demeaning him. Any thing that denies a person a minimum food, dress and shelter, amounts denial of self respect. Any things more than this, amounts to egoistic behaviours or an arrogant behaviours depending on the degree.

Self-respect in a nutshell is how you protect and project your character and reputation as a person. Its how you can live with immorality and wrongfulness - if you can, only means you have no self-respect for yourself. Self-respect is also the same as wanting to be treated with respect. To get that, you'll have to treat other people with respect as well.

there is actually nothing do we expect to be respected of. life is a mirror and we see only our reflections in the activities. therefore if you respect everything around certainly it rebounds to give you respect. u are respected and u are respectful.

Respect always begins with the Self that is why self respect begins with respecting the self in you, as you are the vessel in which the Divine Self resides.

It's what makes up your character. As my father always advised me...:
Considering yourself first
Considering yourself second
And if there is anything left over,,,yourself again.
If you do that first...your character should fall into place and you will treat other as you wish to be treated...always and forever.
