If you are on a jury and the evidence is equal as to Innocent or guilt ,then you must give "THE BENEFIT OF DOUBT " to the accused.Our law states innocent till proved guilty

It has to do with ignorance of rules or some standard of operation, it has wide application. Say I'm playing Chess with you, and I take a pawn en passant. You look at me with great surprise, and exclaim, "You can't do that!" I reply, "Of course I can, read the rules." I take back the move and give you the benefit of the doubt, that you were honest. It can be a issue of trust in some cases.

When no one is sure of the facts or the truth, then the accused is given the benefit of doubt ie let go
