cause if we didn't we'd die, basically when the fight or flight situation kicks in we adrenalin that makes us more amped up and ready to act, then people can run faster, fight harder, or in some cases lift cars, so the ones that didn't fear a long time ago were killed off by their own ignorance and the ones that had that little boost of adrenalin caused by fear got to live and breed till fear was perfected to protect. when we win a fight we get endorphins that kill pain and make us feel happy, we are addicted to this chemical, but when we lose, our pain is increased and we feel horrible, it is the reward and punishment our brain gives us to either say "good job" or "see what happens, don't fail again" this is also why most of us are addicted to roller coaster rides, we get a boost of dopamine chemical afterward to reward you for "defeating" whatever was making you afraid
