Specify your interests, as well as your reading level.
While I enjoy literary classics studied at the college level, for example "Winesburg, Ohio" and "The Sound and the Fury", I can never turn down a Newberry Honors book from my mother's classroom, such as "Dear Mr. Henshaw" or "Bridge to Terabithia". There's a biblical fiction tale I enjoyed "the Red Tent" about women during biblical times, I find Toni Morrison to be a bit depressing but a rewarding read. Then there's always the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit...action/adventure, the list goes on...

To whom by whom and for whom? There are sailors, airplane enthusiasts, race car buffs, horse lovers, sports fanatics etc etc.
There are thousands of publishing companies churning out thousands of books annually. Controversy sells, scandal sells--doesn't it depend on you r definition of what is interesting and popular to the desired groups? I love to read: I have at least 2500 books in my library, I subscribe to most major magazines and international newspapers and I buy books every month. My choice for most interesting cannot be very popular because the types of book I love require serious research.

As far as popularity, it not. But as far as interesting, I really do reccomend "Don Juan: A Yaqui Way of Knowledge". This really challenges the way we take our reality for granted. In this book, a character by the name of Carlos Castaneda, an anthropologist with an interest in peyote and psychedelics, comes across Don Juan Matus, the Yaqui Indian shaman who became Castaneda's teacher and passed on to him the wisdom of a long line of sorcerers. Under the tutelage of Don Juan, the author embarked on a quest to transcend the boundaries of self and identity through drugs, magic, and dream analysis. Seriously worth checking out. It was written in 1968, but because of it's content, is timeless. It really opens your eyes to a whole new appreciation to life!
Just my personal, humble opinion though.

Everyone has a different taste in what they read. For example; A couple of years ago, one of my friends read this book, 'Lola Rose' she hated it, but I loved it. It was about a girl who had to change her name because her father was abusing her and her mother. Her mother, brother and herself ran away. The way Jaqueline Wilson wrote it was amazing!
