Well they're there because when you buy live plants from stores, the plants have snail eggs on them. You can use the lettuce technique (it won't harm anything else in the tank), just place a piece of lettuce on the bottom and the snails will crawl onto it, then just remove the lettuce. Or you can buy fish that eat snails.

But I would keep them, since they help keep the tank in balance.

These snails are great for your tank as they help to keep it clean and keep disease down, they do however breed quite prolifically so i would suggest once a week doing a clean out of the snails and leave only one ore two and feed the rest to any birds or ducks that live in your area as they really like these snails as a tasty snack.

Don't get rid of them compelety beacuse they can help keep down bacteria growth and algea growth and so on.

they came when you put plants in the tank. they can carry parasites which will harm fish luckly you can get rid of them either by physically removing them or by using chemicals(usulally copper based so take care) the chemicals are easily bought at any petstore. but will kill other invertabrates in the tank.
another method is to buy a freshwater puffer which will clear the tank in no time but this is only recommended for brackish water tanks.
